Applying a coupled hydrologic-economic modeling framework: Evaluating conjunctive use strategies for alleviating seasonal watershed impacts caused by agricultural intensification

چکیده
Economic models and watershed provide useful results, but when seeking to integrate these systems, the temporal units typically utilized by must be reconciled. A hydrologic-economic modeling framework is built couple Hydrological Simulation Program-Fortran (HSPF), representing system, with Rectangular Choice-of-Technology (RCOT) model, an extension of basic input-output (I-O) model. This implemented at different sub-annual timesteps gain insight in selecting best suited for addressing questions interest both economists hydrologists. Scenarios are designed examine seasonal increases nitrogen concentration that occur because agricultural intensification Cedar Run Watershed, located Fauquier County, northern Virginia. These scenarios also evaluate selection among surface water, groundwater, or a mix (conjunctive use) practices irrigation within crop farming sector response impacts. When occurs implementing conjunctive use reduces specified limits. The most efficient strategies explicitly considered varies depending on which timestep scenario: bi-annual (wet dry season) vs. timestep. captures interactions between economic systems resolution expands range one can address beyond those analyzed using individual linked this framework.

A tightly coupled GIS and distributed hydrologic modeling framework
Distributed, physics-based hydrologic models require spatially explicit specification of parameters related to climate, geology, land-cover, soil, and topography. Extracting these parameters from national geodatabases requires intensive data processing. Furthermore, mapping these parameters to model mesh elements necessitates development of data access tools that can handle both spatial and tem...
متن کاملLinking Water Quality with Agricultural Intensification in a Rural Watershed
Agricultural intensification was linked to streamwater pollution in a case study watershed using GIS and nutrient budgeting techniques. The results showed that surplus nitrogen applications from fertilizers and manure averaged 120 kg ha−1 yr−1. In some parts of the watershed surplus applications exceeded 300 kg ha−1 yr−1. A consistent increase in pig and chicken numbers (59 and 165% increase be...
متن کاملHydrologic Modeling of a Canal-Irrigated Agricultural Watershed with Irrigation Best Management Practices: Case Study
Simulating irrigation systems by accounting for various water loss rates is necessary while modeling the hydrology of cultivated canal-irrigated watersheds. The existing approaches to modeling canal irrigation use situation-specific optimization procedures. In addition, they are focused on a water management perspective rather than a hydrologic perspective. In this study, an approach is develop...
متن کاملUnderstanding and Evaluating Cumulative Watershed Impacts
Considerable effort is devoted to evaluating cumulative watershed impacts during planning for forestry activities on federally managed lands. With the recently increased emphasis on reducing forest fuels, cumulative impact analyses must now evaluate a new suite of activities over a broader scale than had generally been considered in the past. It is useful to review the concept of cumulative imp...
